Guest Blogger Alicia Levy: The big deal about Georgetown Cupcakes (Washington, DC)

I think the high that I get from tasting new and incredible foods comes from some innate feeling of taste bud excitement that almost everyone in my family possesses.

Whether it be through cooking perfectly smoked bbq ribs w/ homemade sauce, becoming visibly overjoyed at the mere idea of having authentic Shabu Shabu for dinner, or the opportunity to taste an endless variety of gourmet beef jerky direct from the factory (all of these I remember vividly btw)…my fam has always exuded uninhibited passion for great food.

My darling sister Alicia recently visited the now infamous Georgetown Cupcake (made famous on the TLC show DC Cupcakes) She’s sharing the experience with us and making her debut as a guest blogger on girllovesfood!

This afternoon I finally decided to jump on the cupcake bandwagon...again. Most of the concoctions from the hoard of “specialty” cupcakeries that have popped up in the past few years are so blandly sweet that a three mile run and dentist visit are required afterward to feel human again.  So when I had a free hour to fulfill a promise to my beautiful sister (your own girllovesfood) and run down to Georgetown Cupcake, the star of DC Cupcakes, I didn’t expect much.  Little did I know that my perception of cupcakes would be changed forever.

The wonderful folks at Georgetown Cupcake are amazing masters of cake flavor.  Their care and experience comes through with each bite!  To make the most of my trip I picked up 7 cupcakes: classic cream cheese frosted Carrot Cake, the densely chocolate Chocolate2, Vanilla2, fluffy Oreo infused Cookies & Creme, Red Velvet, dulce de leche filled Caramel Apple, and the unbelievable Lemon Berry (which didn’t actually make it home for the tasting party...sorry boys).  Each was perfectly sized and packed with well balanced very natural tasting flavors.  The various frosting, which I usually scrape off of all cake, was hands down the best I’ve ever had.

Our individual recommendations?  My picky picky husband’s favorite was the Carrot Cake, funny as it’s the one I thought he would skip altogether.  My 3 year old angel was a huge fan of the Chocolate2.  As for me, after the hot pink raspberry frosted Lemon Berry was devoured on the way to the car I’m nominating Cookies & Creme as a close second.

The lovely and helpful staff deserves mention.  With a line out the door they still graciously helped one very indecisive pregnant woman (me) choose 7 perfect cupcakes from the extensive offerings. I finally understand what the rage is about. This professional little shop of sunshine deserves it’s reputation as one of the best cupcakeries in the nation. Not because of the fame generated by their television exposure, but because they have elevated a simple classroom dessert to a surprisingly addictive level that will definitely outlast the cupcake fad and bring me back for years to come.

That's my little sister...♥ her!
